Firstly did you say 13GB hard drive? If yes then this is too small. You need at least 40GB Hard drive. You say you have just doubled RAM to 256 meg ok but again you should aim for 512meg at least....The Ram and the small capacity Hard Drive is what is making you PC so slow and slow on the internet. Just because you've got 1 meg broadband doesn't mean you computer can handle it. If you can't increase th RAM again.. I suggest you buy an External Hard drive and store most of what you need on this (buy the largest capacity you can afford) This should help with both the slow RAM speed and the HD capacity. £700!! How old is your PC!!

Personally I use Lavasoft's Ad-aware. It is fantastic. It scans for spyware adware, lets you decide which to keep/delete, and lets you do so. It has an update feature that lets you keep it updated as often as you like. I run the scan daily after every days activity. It always finds something even though I'm carefull with my machine and my surfing. It will get cookies, things in the registry, executable programs, you name it. It drops the hammer on spyware/adware and this version is free: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php OR you can buy a copy with even more features but I've had great success with the free version.

I would install Windows Defender if you have not already done so and I would install AVG. Both are free and excellent. Also this might sound rather obvious but have you Defraged your hard drive?
My Computer - Right-Click the drive - Properties - Tools - Defrag
Has this answered your question?

you may have "Indexing files " on. That would take snapshot after snapshot of your hard drive to make searching them faster.
open My computer and right click on your Hard Drive properties.
if checked, uncheck the "indexing files ...." and choose "all subfolders"
it will take a lot of time depending on the size of the drive.
also "System Restore" will slow u down, but i don't know if it's a good idea for you to turn it off

check for spyware, then go to start, run. type in msconfig. In the window that pops up, uncheck "load startup items". Apply it, hit ok, then reboot. it almost always helps. also, try reinstalling drivers for your network card.
