I went shopping today and at one of the stores, I paid by credit card. I held my card out for the cashier to check my ID/signature. The lady then said to me that she is not allowed to check ID anymore. They have signed a new law (in CA) that prohibits stores from checking ID. She said her manager told her that they weren't allowed to check anymore. Has anyone ever heard of this new law (she thinks it was passed at the beginning of Oct 06) and what is it called? I thought this was absurd.

I don't know about a law that prohibits it, but the credit card companies have long prohibited it and they have online complaint forms you can fill out if a merchant asks for ID.

http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/contactus/merchantviolations.html

Just check the box that says "The merchant/retailer required identification".

Merchants have no right to require ID as once the credit card company authorizes a sale where the card is present and swiped through a terminal, the merchant is protected.

I've never heard of that law. Perhaps it's just your state. They still sometimes ask for ID when presenting a credit card for large purchases here in Georgia.

But effective Oct 1, '06 we no longer pay state sales tax in Georgia for certain grocery items, which I was completely unaware of.'
