I need a sited source. What percentage of people who suffer from depression end up killing themselves? I know that 1 out of 119 people commit suicide (5th leading cause of death). What I need to know is the percentage of people with Major Depressive Disorder.

When I said 1 in 119 people kill themselves, I meant out of the total population... I want the number of out of the depressed population.

This is very difficult to tell since more than 50% of the human population Will suffer one major depressive episode of one sort or another. The diagnosis is more of statistical then symptomatic since (in North America) we use the DSM IV- (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness4th Ed.) Depression diagnosis is of varying degrees but major depression is about 5-7% and of those about 10% (of the major type) try or commit suicide. This is the best I can get but I hope you find better sources.

That needs to be asked because sometimes people kill themselves by accident or it's very possible it may not have been suicide but murder and it was covered up. All people do not kill themselves because they are depressed however a large percentage are depressed.

Well, throw into the equation that many death certificates are filled out by people untrained in the decision making process to properly fill out death certificates. In 28 of the 50 states, people other than doctors are allowed to fill out the death certificates. Then throw into the mix that clinicians are for the most part never formally trained in how to fill out death certificates.

Now, suppose you actually get a number of people who have been certified as suiciding, you have to ask yourself how accurate that is. Then, even if the person who dies gets to the medical examiner's office, and has some sort of drug overdose, but the concentrations are not sky high. Most doctors would hedge their bets and either certify it as accidental overdose or undetermined overdose, giving the benefit of the doubt.

Don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into your research of this important topic, but be aware that it is probably under-represented on death certificate statistics.

There is a great deal of misinformation regarding mental health topics and it is coming from the pharmaceutical industry and the corporate contracted providers of mental health services.

Prozac, Zoloft, and other SSRI like drugs cause agitation (in some people), which can lead to violence including suicide.

In no other area of medicine are lies so prevalent.

Not sure where you can find that statistic. I will offer, however, that 100% of the people that committed suicide were depressed.
