The males will lose the stripes under their tails and females will keep them. The colors dont tell the sex. They both have the same colors. I breed cockatiels.

There's several ways you can tell but it doesn't work on all colors of cockatiel.
The best way to tell is to listen for singing. Males will do a cute warble and will strut and bang their beak at about 6-9 months of age. They start doing this right around the time their adult colors come in. Females will chirp but they don't do an elaborate dance and song.
Females are rather dull colored in the wild color. They're Grey with yellow and Grey/black feathers under their tails. Males are brighter with a yellow head and a solid colored tail. Don't judge a cockatiel's sex by the color of their cheek patch. It rarely works, if ever. Look for the amount of yellow on the head and stripes on the tail. White faced males will have an entirely white head and females will have an almost completely grey head.
Some cockatiel colors need to be DNA sexed if you can't hear the bird sing. These include the 'albino' (actually called the White faced Lutino), Pied and sometimes the Lutino. Pearls, if they're older than 6-9 months are usually always female. Males are born pearl (a speckled and striped color) but become solid colored as they moult. Lutinos will have the same markings as adults but they're very pale and hard to see. Female lutinos will have stripes on their tails. Males will have solid white or solid yellow tails. Male and female pieds tend to lose their sex related markings and males can be striped and females can have solid colored tails.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

female cockatiels have gray color and maybe some white and/or yellow spots. also, female cockatiels lay eggs (even without a male companion). and males dont. also, females are more moody.
