Perhaps your video cable is loose or has been disconnected. Or, you are not on the right channel on your TV's tuner (Input 1 or channel 3). Try them both and you should be back in business.

it doesn't sound like the TV is on the wrong channel because the sound would be all garbled too. You should check how the video is coming out of the direct TV receiver , if it goes right into the TV it shouldn't be hard just make sure the connections are secure and make sure the TV is on the right input. If the connection goes into a surround sound receiver than to the TV make sure the input on the surround sound rec. is correct. If everything still looks good a quick test is to run just a normal piece of cable to the TV from the direct TV receiver and put the TV on ch3 if this works it is some thing with your connections if not it is the direct TV receiver.

Sounds like your TV is on another input(Like for DVD player, VHS player), rather than your input for a cable box. So make sure your TV is on either channel 3 or 4 for reception.
Also sounds like you cable box is trying to receive an HD channel rather than the proper analog channel. If you do not have an HDTV the cable box might receive the channel and produce sound but it will not receive the video portion of the program. So make sure your cable box is getting the proper analog station.

Try to get direct TV to replace your receiver box. If they won't, trash the system & go back to cable, where you can get local service .
