I have read everyones answers. And I do admit where I am wrong, The Native Americans ARE the true Americans and they deserve to hyphenate their name. As for others, It is NOT wrong to remember where your from, and I did not intend for that message to go forth, I ment those who do not wish to be thought of as just Americans. And for the record, I am Scottish, Irish, German, and Cherokee, but I am 100% American.

Excellent observation. American first! As my Father explained it to me, it's all well and good to enjoy the culture from which we descended but we are here to be AMERICANS.

It has to be understood that to be a citizen has its benefits and responsibilities. One must renounce their former allegiances such as their country of origin, support and protect the Constitution against domestic and foreign enemies, and to serve the United States in the armed forces, in combat or non combatant aspect or in civilian service in time of war. Citizenship shld not be taken lightly but patriotically otherwise it will just be easily perceived as a paper of formality but with no strings attached.

The use of hyphenated-american is for the study of human population dynamics as in census; after all US is ethnically diversified country. People will always use a term of distinction, not to erroneously be taken to have a racist connotation.

It used to be that you would strive to assimilate with the U.S. customs outside of your home, but would keep the traditions of the old country alive within the walls of your own home. Now it it all just shoved down your throat whether you like it of not and if you complain you are labeled as a "RACIST". NO, if I wanted to experience mexico I would go there! I do not want to experience it at the store, or next door to my home! MY GOD BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! the whiny ACLU and all the PC morons have us all afraid to be proud of ourselves and our past!

I was born here, i am of Austrian desent, I dont call myself an Austrain -American,, African american is an insult to America, and to the black community, Most of black people are like myself, they are born here.

As long as black people keep placing tags on themselves they will be discrimated against. We are all americans, if you are born here, If your born somewhere else , your from that country.
If you become a citizen, (LEGAL), then you are no longer from there, you are now then an AMERICAN.....

Heck with it, join the fun. Using my family back ground I demand to be known as a
Norweign-Swiss-German-Swedish-English-Scotch-American

I also demand that in the future special quotas for my minority status are awarded. I demand double foodstamps, reparations because there are not enough of my mix of people, also a new Mercedes SL550 coupe would be nice, but only if they give me lifetime free gasoline.

Absolutely you should be an American first, and have allegiance to this country, it's flag and laws. But that does not mean that you can't keep your culture. Italians kept their culture, Asians keep their culture, as should Latinos and others.

I am an American. I am a Native. I am a Veteran. I have no need to prove to any where my loyalties lie. You want proof?,, come and burn an American flag in my presence, see where you wake up. If you do.
