I was in NYC last June. I would say for Brunch-- ignore the snooty overpriced places and go to a regular Coffee Shop. They always have a terrific Brunch Menu, involving eggs or waffles and crisp bacon, at reasonable prices. My favourite is on the corner of Broadway and 68th (It might be 69th! ) where you can sit in the window and watch the passing parade on Broadway.

my favorite NYC brunch ever was at the Life Cafe, where St. Mark's ends at Tompkins Square.

Try Il Mulino's. Its pricy as hell tho.
