Give him a while and he will be climbing anything he can.

Well, if he ever wants to climb it, he will learn to climb it any time. His claws and muscles should be developed enough now for him to do it. If you're wondering why he hasn't tried yet, he may just not have made the connection between the fence and "freedom," or he may just not be the adventurous type. My mom's cat goes outside, but never leaves the non-screened back porch; he just likes to hang out near the door to the house!

Most cats would have learned by now. Did you have your cat declawed? Cats need claws to climb. Maybe the cat is heavy, or lazy, or just uninterested.

Why would you want your kitten to climb a fence? If he or she does, they will get out of the yard, and will eventually be killed (depending on your neighborhood) by dogs, cars, raptors, coyotes or other wildlife. . . or disease. Or else find a new family or just run away. one day your cat simply won't return. The lifespan of a roaming outdoor cat is not long.

Maybe there is another cat nearby and he feels safer in his own back yard. My kitten was climbing the chain link fence at four months but never goes very far as there are a lot of other cats in the neighbourhood. If he's happy in your garden and there are plenty of things to amuse him, I wouldn't worry about it. He's a lot safer there, and he won't be annoying any non cat people!

If he wanted to he'd be trying, in a couple of months he will be out and over the fence quick enough. At six months he is too small to be wandering. If he hasn't been NUETRED yet do it now once mature he'll spray around if not in the house to mark his territory, and you'll hardly see him because he will be out fighting with other males or making a noise outside a females house somewhere.A Full Tom is not a nice pet anyway believe me!

I've only ever owned one since then they go to the Vet before they go out.

Too soon I fear. It is time for him to be neutered before he gets urges to chase after girl cats.

I would keep him entirely in the house through the winter. As the days get shorter and dark comes very early he should not be out. At very least you must train him to come home at dinnertime at dusk. Then he should stay in for the night. The dark, cold and rain make him much more vulnerable to being hit by a cat and most of the predators that would make short work of him are nocturnal.

It takes some time for them to learn ! Our cat managed to climb the fence from every angle by about a year. but they are all different, like children, learning at different speeds. he will have to go out with you perhaps to gain confidence. You could sit him onto the fence and help him along it and down............... Good Luck !!

Around now! My cat's suprised me one day, because they both got some courage from no where and climbed up the fence, then the tree and then onto the neighbours roof, where they nearly ended up falling down the chimney!

Don't rush to get him climbing fences, because he'll soon be a typical Tom cat, who disappears off, and you'll wish he was that cute little kitten who was too scared to leave you.

Consider yourself fortunate. Most kittens love to climb at a very early age. You must be doing something right for your kitten to stay where she is.
