Religions and churches were invented as social organizations.

Religions and churches evolved as a way to structure early human societies.

Evolution works to preserve the various units of life, from genes and chromosomes, through individuals, families and groups, and species.

It gives a group an evolutionary advantage over other groups when its members are tightly organized. Thus, religions and their myths were invented to be strongly social, while being strongly united against rival groups.

As a result of these evolutionary forces, religions and churches are a major cause of the violence in much of the world, from crusades, to holocausts, to Protestant-Catholic killings in Northern Ireland, and even the anti-Moslem hysteria in western countries today.

What is really humorous is that religious people can't see the obvious evolutionary forces which led to the invention of religions. Instead, they try to deny their own roots by rabidly fighting against teaching of science and evolution in public schools.

It is called fellowship with fellow Christians and contrary to popular belief Christians like to have fun too. What is the point in church if we all just go hear a message and leave? We can worship and read our bibles at home. That's what church is for (beyond helping its community) If a new christian comes to church and doesn't get involved with others who believe what will stop them from going back to the bar? We need churches to be social clubs because of members like this:

The people that go to church think they are not going to be condemned for back stabbing, adultery, personal attacks, lust, and selfishness (just to name a few) just because they go to church. That should tell us all something about church people. They'll show up to a place every Sunday, and some days through the week, pay money, only to meet a date and see friends. I'm tired of the fashion show myself. What difference does it make what someon wears to church.

That's a great question. Blessed be.

It stands to reason that many people have abandoned Divine truth for seeking the acceptance of other people. This is what is really behind all these arguments we find here on Yahoo Answers and else where. In order to be accepted by their 'click' many people give in to dogma in order to fit in. This has polluted every creed from from Agnosticism to Zoroastrianism. It seams people consider it a greater sin to not be accepted by their church members than it is to not seek GOD's truth.

For this people have become worshipers of themselves and the dogmas that plague the way of spirit. it is all about not making waves for fear that one might contradict the errors of man.

Here is Jesus rebuke of the "Social Clubs".

Revelation 3:15-19 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

I am not sure if people take God seriously anymore. They forget about him 6 days a week and only remember him for two hours on Sunday, if they can sit in church that long without squirming in their seat in anticipation for the football game at 1:00.

People think that God lives for them, not us living for God.
