I am very sorry to hear that.

What happens depends on a number of things.

Off the shelf Methylated spirits (assuming this is how he got methanol) from hardware stores is pretty potent stuff and also has a high percentage of ethanol too. It is highly damaging to organs of the body.

Methanol in general causes blindness when ingested. I don't know how much he'd have to drink to go blind though.

Ethanol is what is in your average alcoholic beverage. Taken in a high percentage dose is poisonous. It is especially damaging to the liver and other organs.

People can die from alcohol poisoning when they've had too much drink (spirits, wine, beer - whatever) so, I'd say, depending on quantity, quality and percentage of methanol/ethanol, anything else he's taken, aswell as the time elapsed between ingestion and medical intervention, it's anyone's guess what will happen next.

Medical staff should be able to tell you what they can but it's probably a case of playing the waiting game.

Hold tight and just be there for him.

Regards
T

I lost a lot of friends in high school, and it's a really heartbreaking experience. Let them know that you have no idea how awful they must be feeling, but that you lost your cousin, so you can partially relate. Make sure you don't leech onto the grief...I know that sounds horrible, but in high school, a lot of people started coming out of the woodwork to get attention for their "grief" when they didn't even know my friends. Time is the only thing that will make this better for anyone. Just make sure your friends know that you're there for them, and hopefully they'll let you know the same. Everyone needs someone to lean on at times like this. The best thing is to tell them what you need and ask them what they need. Very sorry for your loss, and I hope the pain lessens for you soon.

Get him to a hospital right away. The toxicity takes 8-24 hours to take full effect! My goodness!

But -- even if he survives this experience, the likelihood is that he'll attempt suicide again, and succeed. Your friend needs psychiatric treatment following the emergency treatment for methanol poisoning.

Knew 3 guys who did the same years ago.
It takes time to go through the system then causes blindness and frequently death.
The fact is one guy died and the police eventually traced the other two, whom received immediate medical help .
One ended up blind the other recovered from temporary blindness. Get him help!
This was caused by drinking Methanol and Orange Juice.

He will probably throw up or feel ill. You need to phone Doctor or take him to hospital incase the methyl alcohol causes burning or some scarring in his tummy. Best to get his checked because sometimes effects don't show right away but will appear in a few days.

You are confused and stuck in Jerry Springer land. Click your heels together and come home Dorothy. Suicide attempts are a silent cry for attention and help. If those are the kind of people you choose for friend's then you are as idiotic as your friend. Get a real life and quit trying to be a child with grown up problems.

Your friend needs to find Jesus and get a life. He is in desperate need for attention and if you feed into it then what will he do the next time he is craving for attention? Oh, I don't know, guzzle a whole bottle of Apple Korn and walk out in traffic on the highway? Cut his wrists with a dull butter knife? Come on get real. If he really wanted to kill himself he would have jumped off a bridge or something really drastic and life ending.

There are better things to do in life than feel into other people's bs.

He's most likely to go sick. Methanol is not very lethal, depends on the quantity consumed. The poison takes between 12-24hours to take effect.

Try to treat him as soon as possible. Not the smartest way to commit suicide.

Many homeless alcoholics have drunk methylated spirits for long periods without ill effect, but it can make you go blind, damage internal organs, your body has an enzyme to break down ethanol, normal alcohol, but not methanol so it is dangerous.

Take him to the hospital IMMEDIATELY! Yes he can die from it. It is a poison. He also needs much more care that you can give him if he is suicidal. Get him help NOW.

methanol is a poisin but not a very clean one for killing people, most likely will cause blindness or brain damage if it doesn't kill him. Idiotic thing thing to do !!!
