Saying it was based on a true story made for better box office, Alfred Hitchcocks "Psycho" was based on the same case, and they are equally true to the facts. By the way, his name was Ed Gein. He was also partial inspiration for the "Buffalo Bill" killer in "Silence of the Lambs", that one also drew on Ted Bundy and Gary Hednick.

Because the killer in TCM is actually based on a mixture of serial killers. Ed Gein was just one of them.

a) It's Ed Gein, not Gain (that's dish soap)
b) Ed wasn't as violent as this dude, he only killed women and he only killed like 4, the rest he just dug up...
