It hurts me so much when people are so damn rude.
My dads side of the family are Muslim, theyre from Iran.
I can tell you first hand that i have a BEAUTIFUL family.
They dont cover their faces but most women dont in Iran, they only cover their hair as it's the law. Most of them dont even wear their head scarves when theyre in England.

And for the ones that cover their faces, it is their RELIGION, not because theyre 'Ugly'.
Its ignorance like this that make England such a bad place.

Did you know that after Jack Straw made his appauling statement, a Muslim woman had her head scarf ripped off by an old man and she was abused?

Jesus said do not worry about what you will eat or your body or the clothes you shall put on it.

This country is a joke.

there are varying standards of purdah or covering. these are two standards followed by purdah-practising Muslim women. they are standards which were used by women of faiths other than Islam as well - it is a religious not political thing. visit http://alislam.org/library/links/00000133.html
to learn more by reading a short article written by a Muslim woman who practices purdah (not all do and that is their own choice).

the first standard of purdah is a minimum one where you just cover your head and dont wear make up or fancy clothes whatever. the other is maximum where you are wearing makeup and fancy clothes.

the second standard is for when a Muslim woman would probably wear makeup and fancy clothes. on such occasions she may be attending a party or function where she will be taking her outside purdah off (e.g. at a family wedding etc) and relax and enjoy showing off her new clothes or hairstyle with her female friends & family. on such occasions teh dress code is formal and dressy -just like similar parties in other faiths and cultures.the main difference is that she will not be in the presence of male strangers for the conveience of such women because if there were any there then she may feel it more approproate to cover herself again for modesty.

regarding some answerers views that Muslim women who wear makeup and cover themselves at the same time seem confused, please let me know why you bother to wear fancy underwear under your outer clothes? would that not make you similarly confused? ;-) just kidding. surely it is up to each individual what they wear - as long as it is appropriate for their circumstances. sometimes a woman may develop a habit to wear maximum purdah even when she is not wearing makeup etc but it is her perogative when she does and not - not yours.

regarding if they are ugly or not - i hope you are never privileged enough to find out considering your attitude. God-fearing Muslim women do not cover themselves to 'hide their ugliness', titillate or to create a mystery. they do it in order to try and practise their peaceful faith in the best way they can.

furthermore what is beautiful to a Gambian man (often a thick lipped heavy set woman) and what is beautiful to a chinese man (often a thin lipped slender woman) is starkly different. what you find attractive says more about you than the person you behold.

The Burkha, veil was too hide woman from temptations of a man, as you would read many think about sex more than women. Just look at the rape stats they are high in Europe and almost non-existent in muslim countries where the Burkha is compulsory. One should have a right to follow what one feels. We should be free but who is, west is not free we are tied down by rules and regulations and laws. When the laws differ we choose not to except them and they look bizarre. The same Way the western life looks bizarre too other people and cultures and they say it is ridiculous as we say to them.

Self esteem and bullying from muslim males may also play a part. Mabe they are threatened wth death if they don't wear it. Have you ever heard of honour killings? what is honourable about murdering your own family members?

Why should I care if someone wants to cover their face? If that's what floats your boat, go for it.
