And, please, spare me those completely meaningless buzz words such as "energy" and "light" (blech).

Oh, right, and bonus points for those who leave God out of this discussion entirely...

I don't think there is any comparing the two.

Contrasting is easy, because they are two dissimilar concepts, but in order to abide by your guidelines, all popular definitions of the word soul would have to be omitted, so what is left? Soul in the Motown sense? Brother you got soul?

Soul is primarily a religious word, so how do we discuss it without discussing religion? Personally, I don't believe in the concept of a soul, spirit, center, energy or any of that nonsense, so I wouldn't even try to compare it with mind. The mind is easy. It's the workspace of imagination, memory and cognition. Since it is a concept as opposed to a physical "place", it may be argued that it falls under the banner of metaphysics, but there is a pretty strong consensus among human beings that the mind is real. There are many millions who argue the soul does not exist.

The Spirit ( Soul)
This is described as having no mass, no wave-length,no energy and no time or location in space except by consideration or postulate.
The spirit is not a "thing". It is the "creator" of things.
The usual residence of the soul, (spirit, awareness of awareness unit....YOU) is in the skull or near the body.
The soul can be in one of four conditions.
1. Entirely separate from a body or bodies.
2. Near a body and knowingly controlling the body.
3. In the body (the skull).
4. An inverted condition, compulsively away from the body and unable to approach it.

There are degrees of each of the above 4 conditions.
The most optimum of these from the standpoint of man, is the second.

The Mind
This is a communication and control system between the spirit and it's (his) environment.
The mind is a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities and interactions of the spirit with the Physical Universe and other spirits/individuals.
These activities include the operating of a body and the solving
of problems related to survival and existence.
The mind has 2 Parts:
The Analytical Mind. The keynote of this mind is awareness. One knows what one is concluding and knows what one is doing.
The Reactive Mind. This is a stimulus response mechanism.
This mind acts below the level of consciousness. It never stops operating unlike the Analytical Mind which can be less aware or even completely unconscious.

The Body
A carbon/oxygen engine. This can best be studied in such books as "Grey's Anatomy" and other anatomical texts.

MIND
You have a conscious mind. That statement may seem basic, but it sums up something that unquestionably makes you exceptional. The mind has been described as “the elusive entity where intelligence, decision making, perception, awareness and sense of self reside.” As creeks, streams, and rivers feed into a sea, so memories, thoughts, images, sounds, and feelings flow constantly into or through our mind. Consciousness, says one definition, is “the perception of what passes in a man’s own mind.”

SOUL
Right in the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, we are told that the soul is not something you have, it is something you are. We read of the creation of Adam, the first human being: “The man came to be a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) The Hebrew word used here for soul, ne′phesh, occurs well over 700 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, never once conveying the idea of a separate, ethereal, spiritual part of man. On the contrary, the soul is tangible, concrete, physical.

We should get even more bonus points by leaving the word "soul" out of this discussion. With the restrictions you have set, can you define "soul" for us? ;-)

My understanding is that a soul is a heavier type of spirit that
can be affected by baser spiritual aspects, like forces at work. Magnetism being paramount.
As opposed to mind which is pure spirit, and not hindered by
the baser aspects.

religious folk call their consciousness (self) their SOUL ...and they believe its immortal .... the MIND is just another word for it. (although Christians will never agree with that)

actually, mind/soul is not real ... the feeling of "self" happens because of a chemical process's in the brain.. just like all the other processes in the brain

emotion is another one

i usually think of mind as more of an intellectual side, reason and logic and thinking. to me, soul is harder to define... it's sort of like a basic feeling way down deep in your gut. (to me, heart is the emotional side, but when that is stripped away, what you feel is your soul.) something like that. hope this helps!
