He was most likely swarthy like mideasterners. The blond haired blue-eyed Jesus is not historically correct.
The reason we (as westerners) make Him white, is so that we can relate to Him. I also suppose there is tradition from Medieval artwork in play too. The Medieval artists used people around them as models. No one claims "The Last Supper" is an historical representation, but it is a great piece of art and moving.
Westerners are not the only ones who portray Jesus to look like them. Africans often represent Jesus as a black person, which is just as inaccurate.

It was part of God's design that His chosen people should inhabit a part of the world on the borders of Asia, Europe and Africa. Jesus was brown. He spent a great deal of time in the sun, so was probably quite a dark brown colour.

Your answer lies with the Catholic Church and the artisits of Europe. It was much easier to portray Jesus as a white man than an olive skinned or black man from northern Africa.

Jesus was probably brown skinned or black. Most paintings of Him have been by Europeans, that's why He's been portrayed as white.

Jesus probably looked quite like modern day Jews in Israel do. white with hebrew features. he difinitely was not black or oriental. But he didn't have blonde hair and blue eyes either.

Of course He was not. He was a Middle Eastern Jewish man so I presume He looked physically much like they do. Olive complexion and dark hair and eyes. We all tend to think of Him as looking like we do. Orientals often portray Him as oriental,Native Americans as Native American, Blacks as black. Personally I do not think it is important. He could be blue with pink dots and I would not love Him less.

He would have looked like someone who was born in Palestine. He is pictured that way, because of racism.

If Jesus was significantly different from the local population in this way, would it not be mentioned in Christianity's book of myths?
