I think that you will meet the good & the bad in both places. I wouldn't say one is friendlier than the other. I live in CA, but have been to New York a couple of times. Personally, I think that even though NY has worse weather, NYC has more things to do and the atmosphere is more exciting than CA. I know some other people from CA who have been to NYC and they said they would move there if it wasn't for the weather. I feel the same way.

I am a native Californian but had wanted to go to New York City since I was a child. TV shows and movies, particularly 40s and 50s urban noir, made NYC a huge magnet for me. I saved my money from a summer job and took the bus there before my senior year in high school. Mid 70s.
I was familiar with all the NY cliches, but found the people, by and large, to be as friendly and helpfull as Angelenos, if a bit louder and "snappier" in conversation. I did the whole tourist thing, including getting mugged right outside Port Authority.
Every time I go back to NY it is kind of like being on speed or drinking a quadruple espresso--frenetic, energetic, on the move. I think it's a great place to visit, but I would much rather live in California, where mountains meet the sea. New York still has the better art museums, but California is making inroads.
Just watch the stereotypes: not all New Yorkers are rude and callous and not all Angelenos are airheaded space cadets. As for Northern California, it is very beautiful. Frisco may be the prettiest city on the planet, but a lot of the people are very pretentious--see what happens when you call "The City" 'Frisco'.

I live in NYC and I think its rude to say that people here are rude. Which honestly I think California is worse than New York. New York has different types of people who are all different and were all just layed back. Maybe the waether can get bad but, we have more snow days than you(hahah). Actuallly, I hate people from Cali who say its like SOOO COLD. Cali is too warm and so many people there are stobborn and greedy. So take New York, more things to do and different types of people!

I've spent a lot of time in California and New York (City). I find that Californians are generally more friendly to strangers. New Yorkers are more cautious about who they befriend but they can be really warm once you are accepted there.
It also depends where you are in the state. San Francisco and upstate New York are more friendlier than, say, Los Angeles and New York City.

RE:
California vs. New York?
I heard Californians are more laid back and down to earth than New Yorkers. People would tell me that they would visit New York and said that the people there are rude and not as down to earth as Californians. Also, they say that their hospitality and attitude is cold as the weather and that...

Well there's more to New York than just the city. OF course some people might be rude in NYC because they have places to be and jobs to do, but the rest of New York is as friendly as ever.

Wow, I was born and raised in SoCal, but have visited NY, and they are each unique in their own right. I don't think you can compare the two, not really. As for people, they both have people, so that means there are nice people in both, and turds in both, right? :)
California used to be well known for "laid back" people, and in fact, back in the 70's, if you told someone you were "from" California, you almost had celeb status! LOL
People used to love Californians, and they (we) were laid back, but I left SoCal in 1984, and became an Arizona resident. To me, Arizonans are laid back now, seriously, however, you would not know it on the freeway! :(
Now I live in Eastern WA, and the people here are pretty nice for the most part, but same same, there are some turds here to! :(
So, my point is, people are people, and will be what/who they are no matter where you go, and I think how YOU interact with people can make a difference in your own personal perception of anyone, anywhere! :)
