Allah is Arabic for God. Even though Christian Arabs worship God they refer to Him as Allah.
The Allah that Arab Christians worship is not the same Allah that Muslims worship.

First I want to correct you that Allah wasn't a moon god or a pagan god..Allah is the Arabic name of God..yes you said it is derived from al ilah which means the god..while in English they made it from an indefinite noun to a definite noun by making the G capital so it became God=the god..the arabs changed ilah"god" to alilah"the God" as the definite noun..then it became Allah to become easier to say..then Hubal and those others were not other names for Allah but they were the idols which Amr Ibn Huyai brought from Syria to Mecca before the Prophet's time by many years (may be centuries as I'm not sure about the date)..then those idols "360 in number" were put around the Kaaba and their names are documented until now in the Arabic history books and non of them was called Allah.
Allah is the name used to refer to God in the Arabic translation of the bible and the Arab Jews and Christians used this names even before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)..this is also documented as many Christian Arab poets before Islam used the word Allah in their poetry...the moon God was Hubal not Allah
Then we come to the Kaaba..The Kaaba isn't worshipped now and wasn't worshipped even at the time of the idols..but it was made by Allah as the direction to where Muslims pray to..this is called Qibla..and the hous of Allah doesn't mean that Allah lived in the Kaaba or the holy mosque but it is the house that Allah made as a sacred place for his worshippers and the place of pilgrimage..just like Jerusalim for Christians "By the way Jerusalim is also a holy land for Muslims and Al Aqsa mosque is the third holy mosque for Muslims"..And the whole city of Mecca is holy not only the mosque...Mecca is the same Pharan you know in the Bible which is its ancient name..the place were Abraham left Hagr and Ishmael to live and God said to Abrahm in the Bible:Genesis 17:20
And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
So Ishmael lived there and from his descendants came Quraish the tribe which Prophet Muhammad was born for"pbuh".
And the Kaaba was built by Abraham and Ishmael as it is mentioned in the Qur'an:And when We made the House (at Makka) a resort for mankind and sanctuary, (saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray). And We imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My house for those who go around and those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship). "2, 126"
And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House, (Abraham prayed): Our Lord! Accept from us (this duty). Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower. "2, 127"
and about the moon god theory..this very fragile..as Allah said in the Qur'an:
And of His portents are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon; but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if it is in truth Him Whom ye worship. "41, 37"
So if Allah was a moon god why would he frobid us from prostrating to the moon? And the verse and many verses are clear that Allah is the creator of the sun and the moon and everything..he is not a moon god.
Now you will go saying what about the crescent...Allah knew that many people will ask this question so he revealed this verse in this miraculous way as a simple answer for your question:
They ask you about the phases of the moan. Say, "These are signs for the people to reckon dates and fix the periods for hajj." Also tell them, "It is no virtue to enter your houses from their backs during the Hajj days); real virtue is that one should refrain from incurring the displeasure of Allah; so enter your houses by their proper doors. and fear Allah so that you may gain (true) success"2, 189"
the arabic word "al ahillah" which was translated as the phases of the moon is the plural of hilal which is crescent moon..so Allah simply tells me and you that the crescent moon is only significant as a mean for calendar "months and hajj" not more than this..and its use as a symbol was not known in the time of the prophet "pbuh" or his companions or even the first three centuries of Islam.
So who is Allah in the Qur'an?
this is one of the answers in the Qur'an for your question:
He is Allah besides Whom there is no god. He is the Knower of the unseen and the seen: He is the Compassionate and the Merciful. He is Allah, besides Whom there is no god: He. is the Sovereign the Holy, the Source of safety, the Giver of peace, the Guardian, the All-Mighty, the Enforcer of His decrees, and the ever Supreme. Exalted is Allah alone Who is the Planner of Creation , its Enforcer and its Fashioner. His are the excellent names. Whatever is there in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him. and He is the All-Mighty and the All-Wise. "59, 22-24"
