Probably only through your dreams, if it were possible at all.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

First, I feel that the Jehovah's Witnesses, and an examination of Jewish beliefs, provides a pretty good case that the message of the Bible is that the dead remain unaware until the End Times have been accomplished--but you'll have to do your own research on that one (and should).
Secondly, upon actually having some kind of contact or conversation--how can you be sure that it is your loved one--not some kind of demonic spirit with ill intent--no matter how good the advice or how true the theology seemed--read up on King Saul's adventure with the Witch of Endor trying to contact the spirit of the Prophet Samuel--and, given that you accept the New Testament as your guide--when is the appeal to believe by any of the evangelists ever based on conversation with the dead?
If the dead are coming to arn you of anything, and you think it is real, you ned to ask if you need a broader philosophical base than standard--issue Christianity provides. If you want to stick with standard-issue Christianity, leave out the shamanism.

Here are the facts from the Bible:
1. Loved ones who die stay in the grave until one of two resurrections at the end of the world --when Jesus comes back the second time (saved are raised to life for ever) or 1000 years later when Jesus comes back the third time (lost are raised to life to die the final death in hell fire.
2. The dead do not know anything, have no memory, can not communicate with anyone. Death is like a deep sleep. The human soul is not immortal. Only God is immortal.
3, So they do not go directly to hell.
4. They can not communicate from the grave.

Just by asking your question, you have already advanced to the another stage of your own development and awareness.
Consider that energy can neither be created, nor destroyed. Perhaps this will lead you to reframe your question in such a way as to understand "Life". If this concept of endless energy might be true (and I suspect it is) then Death is not Death; it is a continuation. All existence is a creation of pure and unconditional love. No one is forever lost, and the universe has unlimited forgiveness. Be open to this and the answers you seek will come to you.

despite what many believe ... there are many genuine reported and studied cases of people communicating in the after life
i myself have had many such experiences and have studied many also
and they all say the same thing .... it is beautiful
and funnily enough , some of them were not christian
and in response to the houdini answer ... if he had studied houdini properly
houdini was a great believer in the after life until his own wife died and houdini knew many great mediums
but houdini and his wife had a pact that she would mention a secret word to him via a medium
despite houdini recieving many great pieces of evidence during mediumistic readings , he dismissed them because this secret word was never revealed
only then did he give up on mediumship sadly

I don't think there is a place of torment. When you have even the smallest glimpse of a REAL experience of God/Jesus, you'll realize just how silly all the ego/human projections of god are.

hmm...a true Christian believes in Heaven and Hell ... everyone is saved if they have Jesus in their heart...but those who do not are not saved...but do they go to hell? or do they go to where they believed they would go when they died?
So hard to answer your question unless your God...sorry

they tell you when you are all alone and you feel the hair stand up on the back of your neck after you have done something bad that day.
