Is it because the body needs more calories or the stomach is not physically full of food? If the former, then invariably people must feel hungry to lose weight. If the latter, then how come eating the same physical amount of spinach (area wise) would not fill a person up if they ate the same physical amount of peanut butter.

Its a combo! eating large volumes of food does fill one up (so does water sometimes) but, if a person eats a great volume of food but not enough cals, like hardly ny, even less than even people trying to lose weight should, then ones body will be hungry and crave calorie dense food. However, things like sugar and refined breads, give quick energy to the body, then spikes the blood sugar, leaving you hungry sooner. To answer you last question, peanut butter has protein, and protein sends "I'm full" signals to the brain! hope this made sense!

Think about this: Each organ in the body has a specific purpose. This is also true of the stomach,ie, it's purpose is to receive the products that we ingest. It does not have to be full in order to work properly, but you must put something in it to maintain the purpose for which it is there. People are going to feel hungry at some time whether they are trying to lose weight or not. I don't think the amount of what you eat matters so much as whether it is appealing to your appetite. This is why some diets will allow a person to have a small portion of their favorite foods rather than just eating everything that is unappealing to them all the time.

I think it's something to do with fat/protein. Fat takes longer to digest and does not pass through the digestive system, as quickly as other foods do, but gets absorbed by the body. That's my understanding of it anyway. I hope the link helps.

caloric need determines hunger, but a full stomach is uncomfortable and will dissuade the person from eating.
