I know what that Linux could be installed on gadgets such as an ipod, a gamecube, an xbox, etc. But why would anybody do that? what is the purpose of engaging in this task?

You're right. What's the point? What's the point to rock climbing. What's the point to writing a story. What's the point to listening to music - in which case, what's the point to an IPOD anyway?

The point is to do it because you can. Because maybe the linux os on that device can do MORE than the original, poorly designed software included with it.

some people just like to have linux on everything.

Now some companies put linux on their router,vcr,or other electronic gadget, because there is no use re-inventing the wheel. why write your own os when you have a ready made one already.

so your fridge, coke machine, photocopier, home security system can be accessed, interrogated, altered, repaired - they can even display web pages
