A hand is 4 inches so you can either multiply by 4 to get inches....OR you can divide by 3 (A hand is one third of a foot) to get feet and multiply the remainder by 4 to get inches. So 17/3 = 5 r 2 so 5 feet eight inches at the shoulder. The average height is actually about 14.3 in the US, although it is a little taller on the east coast where a lot of english riding is done or in other areas where tbs and other taller breeds are common.
