If your a smoker, this is from smoking if not you have allergies. This is your lungs way of getting rid of the excess mucus that is protecting your lungs from pollutants, the pollutants can be from smoke, dirt, dust, dander and mold. Coughing is a reflex action started by stimulation of sensory nerves in the lining of the respiratory passages - the tubes we use to breathe.

When a person coughs, there is a short intake of breath and the larynx (the voice box) closes momentarily. The abdominal and chest muscles used for breathing contract, which in turn increases the pressure needed to drive air out the lungs when the larynx re-opens.

The resulting blast of air comes out at high speed, scrubbing and clearing the airway of dust, dirt or excessive secretions.Coughing is a symptom, not a disease. It is the underlying cause of the cough that needs to be treated.

That's a pretty clear sign of infection, but the good news is that your body coughing up the phlegm means it's fighting and ridding itself of the infection. Be patient, papmer yourself, and be careful about taking medications that suppress symptoms -- they may help you feel better but those symptoms are your body fighting the infection, so you don't want to get too much in its way.

First off I gotta ask, are you a smoker? That is common for smokers...and if not then how long has this been happening? You may have an infection just guessing from the color of the sputum you are spitting up. If it keeps persisting you need to consult a doctor to see what is going on...
