I live in Florida. They are the most well behaved and friendly dogs you would ever meet. Intelligent (the Irish is smarter than the wheaten) and have a great sense of humor. However, they dig. There are small holes all over our backyard. They have been doing this for about 8 years. I am afraid they are going to dig up a coral snake. How can I prevent them from digging? I know they are natural ground hunters (they sure aren't retreivers!- they play keep away) and love to goof around and dig for rodents in the ground.

If you sprinkle pepper around the digging areas this might help them to stop. I have even heard some people use red pepper. It wont hurt your dogs and, they wont like the way it makes their eyes burn. good luck........ :)

The Wheaten Terrier is of a wonderful character which can be trained by a caring and loving family like any other dog only exceptions are security dogs which need to be trained for a specific purpose. These two types of terrier are bred for two different purposes the benefit's have to be looked at carefully. Firstly the wire haired terrier is a lively chap ok they may need some firm handling but at the end of the day you have a loyal working dog. As we breed Wheaten terriers and have bred other breeds as well for over 30 years find they are comical well behaved yet always full of life and energy. We recommend you ask the soft coated wheaten terrier club if you can visit someone with one close to you and then if you still like the dog then you have to be vetted with regards to being suitable owners as you will know that both you and the dog are matched for life. The wheatens other benefit is that it doesn't not moult hairs all over the place but does need grooming due to its teddy bear coat. hope this helps you

I have answered this question about fifteen times. Did you try searching for previous questions that have the word 'digging' in them?

Dogs HAVE to dig. Like humans have to breathe. Make them a sand pit with clearly defined borders. Bury bones in it to encourage them to dig there. If you go outside and they are digging in the wrong spot, pick them up and drop them in the sandpit.

If they persist in digging up the yard, lay chicken wire over the grass and peg it down. Dogs can't dig through wire mesh.

Please let your dogs dig. It keeps them from being bored. Just make sure they know where they can and can't dig.

Trying to keep a terrier from digging is virtually impossible. It's genetically "carved" in his brain, its like trying to prevent a Border Colley from gatherig sheep. You can try to distract their attention from the digging when your'e around of course, but when the dogs are alone it's their way of stopping boredom, in other words, for dogs digging is great fun. Do your dogs get their amount of exercise? You can take them for long walks in the woods to "wear out" their need to hunt (they might surely tire you out before you do but it's worth a try).
