Anyone know of anything scientifical that would prove it either way?

If you have an infection in or around your mouth/throat area eating sugar will cause the bacteria count to increase very rapidly.

I doubt that sugar would make you worse if you are sick...the only way it would is if you are already predisposed ie diabetic or borderline...if it does make you worse then you need to see a doctor to make sure that you are not borderline diabetic...hope that helps!
