well it depends on how deep the stain is and how old
try out on an unseen part first
you could try light rubbing with wire wool to get rid of the marks but you must maintain the same direction as the grain or it will look a mess be patient
then a mild light stain and button polish
start light and darken as needed
if its too deep then a resanding and polishing will be needed to lessen the effect of the staining

I had a Kleenezze catalogue put through my door last week and I remember seeing something in it that would do the trick for you. Can't remember the name of the product though. Sorry, I suppose this will only help you if you get Kleenezze books through your door.

try that furniture stain/ polih. Its old english brand or something like that. You can find it at walmart, it works wonders. I use it to cover up little dings in old wood furniture. Try it!
