I've seen this happen to people many times and its happened to me a few times. The last time this happened, I was eating in a cafeteria and i felt the cleaning solution spray on my arm. I figured I was being paranoid at the time, continued to eat, and didn't feel ill afterwards. My question is if poisoning would have been possible and if this has ever happened to anyone and what is the appropriate thing to do in this situation?

Don't be paranoid.
You don't mention what type of cafeteria, school, hospital, restaraunt, etc?
But I would bet that it is a non-toxic,company approved cleaning solution.
Be happy that the place where you eat seems to be getting cleaned regularly!!
Bon Apetite !

I've been in food service for about 20 years, and although I don't claim to know everything, I might be able to help. Most cleaning solutions that are used in restaurants are made of food safe sanitizer. They are also heavily diluted, so the probability of you getting sick is not great. However, courtesy would say that you should absolutely not be disturbed while eating. I doubt the employee would ask you to lift your feet if she were sweeping. Speak up about it. They probably didn't realize they were bothering you, or "forgot" that chapter in the customer service manual.

It probably is legal. But that is very rude! I work in a gym, we are not even allowed to spray the equipment because it might spray someone, we have to spray right into the clothe. I certainly wouldn't want this in my food and some people have skin allergies to these. I would definately say something or turn her in if she continues to do it. You sould probably tell your school nurse, so that you can have it documented in case you get sick, or get a rash.

well i believe they shouldn't spray things while people are at lunch. they should wait, you know people there ready to do there work and get it over with, they don't like waiting on people to eat lunch, hang around in the cafeteria. So to your question i don't think it was the spray, it probably just you, but if you feel like you need to take further actions called your doctor and tell them what happened. And see what he tells you.

Tell the cleaning lady about it,and how you feel. Then I would tell her if it happen a again that you will report her.No that is not safe what so ever. You could have came ill if it got into your food and you ate it.

I think I would have said something to the person cleaning around me. Either that or I'd get up and move.

Not that closely but I know what you mean...I do not think that anything bad will happen but if it is bothering you, tell them that it might get in your food and to please not spray so close to your tray. They need to know these things.
