I live in an apartment, my neighbor is a carpenter, he makes all the furniture in his garage and makes a big mess and a lot of noise. The landlord doesn't do anything about it. Is this legal, is he braking any laws. I live in Costa Mesa CA.

Give the guy a break. He's just trying to make a living. Don't do anything to him.

There may be certain zoning restictions in your area against this activity, but it is probably a local ordinance or law.

I personally would just talk to the guy and ask him not to make as much noise during unreasonable times and to try to clean up his mess a little bit more. He is clearly just trying to make ends meet and will probably be much more receptive to your needs if you ask him politely than going after him legally.

He needs the landlord's permission.

He needs any state/county/city license's required by your local laws.

He needs the appropriate self-emlpoyed status with the IRS.

He needs understanding neighbors who don't have an issue with a guy just trying to make a living.

no. if he is a carpentar then he should have a carpentars licence. if not who cares. he is trying to make a living with what he knows how to do and is probably good at it. shut the windows turn on some fans or ac if it's too hot. What if it was you? I live in an apartment in NY and my neighbor has a contracting business. he too makes noise and a mess but we deal with it. They are very sweet people trying to make a living to support his family. Give your neighbors a break.

Call the fire department they will stop him! He is in violation sparks may fly and catch the building on fire which is violating public safety.

Call the city zoning office and make a complaint. He's operating with no business license.

There is nothing your landlord can do! You don't even have to give your name.

He may be in violation of a zoning law. Generally speaking, you cannot run a commercial business out of a house zoned residential.
