NCOs and Warrant Officers are the backbone of the British Army. A good one is worth his weight in gold.

The SMs or RSMs are the guys that lead into battle while the officers stand well back shouting go get them. The staff officers are the real brains and advise the dumb officers.
Yes I've had a stuffing off the RSM, I made the mistake of going to the officers ball with an American staff sergeant, what a roasting I got.
As for orders off younger NCOs, it didn't bother me because we had the discipline drummed into us and orders were unquestioned.
Oddly on the drama series 'Soldier', Tucker did that also, as that's my surname I always wondered if a colleague had wrote the series because other events mirrored my life in the forces also.

The answer is simple:
Officers are trained as managers - their primary concern is promoting and enforcing policy. A formal approach works best when trying to enforce policy - hence the aloofness.
Sergeant Majors are leaders - they must mentor and directly set the example for the troops. Mentorship requires a personal and direct relationship. Leaders must be engaged and concerned with the relationships of those around them in order to inspire confidence.

Yes, the main problem with officers is that if they take a 5 min break you have to retrain them when they get back. Plus there is nothing more dangerous than a butter bar with a map!

It really depends on the person. Most soldiers tend to respect their enlisted leaders more than the officers, mostly due to the fact that the officers they are exposed to are LTs and CPT's, who aren't much older than they are.
I'm really fortunate. Both my XO and CDR are both previously enlisted (Green to Gold). Officers that were previously enlisted tend to be treated with more respect b/c they've been in our shoes. It's the same with the senior enlisted.

I'm not in the army, but let me bring this question down to my level...
If I had to shag one.... and really it would be if dying wasn't an option... I would pick the officer... and I really mean if dying wasn't an option... although I'm sure I could make my heart stop if confronted with shagging anyone from the British Army at whatever rank.
