I have to admit, your question is contradictory.
But I can understand your statement.

You are contradicting yourself. Generally, the statement, "I believe in God", implies that you believe God is real, not fictional.
I am an atheist. I believe God is fictional. That doesn't mean I reject all social or moral value that theists attribute to God as either the creator of, or the perfect embodiment of. I just reject the idea that God exists or is necessary at all for us to have these social or moral values.
I think maybe you are trying to say that it is ok to pretend God is real, and go to church, and follow most of the teachings of the God you "believe" in, while knowing inside that this God is actually fictional. Probably a lot of people do that. It is likely that some parents are afraid to tell their children that they don't believe in God because they fear the consequences which that admission would produce. In this case, when the children ask their atheistic parents if they believe in God, the parents are likely to say "yes".

first, what kind of believer are YOU? i am a believer--i believe that there is no one god out there, there are many. i don't necessarily think they are fictional gods out there, just some that are a little different than what i am used to, and so they may sound fictional, but really are not. make sense?

I do feel your sentiments coz am also in the same position like yours before. I never knew God personally. I only read about him, know his laws and commandments, his likes and dislikes, his attributes, nevertheless he is not real to me as if he is just a fictitious character in a story.
Seeking who he was made me believed more and more than ever in my life. You should know him personally through reading the scriptures and reading also some made by man of God and personal testimony of those who has a personal relaitonship with Jesus. And read the book "THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD" this book will give you an idea how God control the entire universe and man, inanimate objects, salvation, will of man, administration of the world. Then read more about Jesus, who is was and what is his place in the great plan of God.

I think you are beginning to realize tht "belief" for most people, in spite of their denials, is nothing more than a declaration of membership in one group or another.
Most people don't realize that belief in fictional characters is no different than belief in something you cannot verify or prove.
Your next question to dea with is do you have a choice or is there any real alternative to membership in a group of believers who are believers just so they can be members and not be left out, ostracized, or abused as a non-member.

I suppose I do as well. When I refer to god, I am referring to the concept of a fictional god, not the sky pixie.

You can't believe in someone you don't believe is real. It's the same as believing in a mythological creature or being.
