Recipes for Milk Replacer Formula and Weak Puppy Booster

There are many versions of these formulas available now. What you see below is my experimenting to find a formula that worked for MY puppies. So, these formulas have been field tested and I find them very useful. Good luck.

Milk Replacer Formula:

10 oz. evaporated milk (whole fat or part skim -- do not use all skim) or goat's milk
3 oz. sterilized water (baby water or boiled water) -- delete if using goat's milk
1 egg yolk (raw)
2T regular mayonnaise (optional)
1 cup whole fat yogurt (whole fat or part skim -- avoid all skim)

Place all ingredients in a blender and mix (or use a wire whisk) till well blended. Use all formula within 7 days.

Warm formula to puppy body temperature before feeding. Always discard formula leftover at a feeding. This formula is thick and so is best administered by stomach tube. If using a bottle, you may need to enlarge the hole slightly. It provides 11 calories per cc.

Weak Puppy Booster

This formula is meant to be used on newborns who are chilled, weak or otherwise compromised. This formula should be administered every 1-2 hours (or more often) by stomach tube and the puppy should be warmed slowly. Once the puppy begins to maintain a normal body temperature, regular feeding can resume. NEVER FEED A CHILLED PUPPY MILK REPLACER.

8oz. lactated ringers solution or sterilized water
1 tablespoon white Karo syrup or white sugar (do not use honey)
OR
Substitute plain, unflavored Pedialyte

Mix ingredients and warm to body temperature. Preferred administration is stomach tube (to ensure correct dosage). Feed 1/2 cc per 2 oz. of body weight once per hour. If puppy is very weak, you may half the dosage and feed twice as often. This formula should be followed up with milk replacer as soon as the puppy is maintaining normal body temperature. This formula should not be fed exclusively for more than 8 hours.

Puppy Milk Formula
This is used as a supplement if you have to hand-raise, given to the ***** during whelping process as well as given to puppies who are being weaned. I mix it with baby rice or oatmeal cereals as the first meal. I have also used it to boost milk production by cutting it 50/50 with water and giving it to the mom. This recipe was given to me by Lydia Laycook of Von Rhinegold Kees Kennels who obtained it from [I believe] Michigan State Veterinary University. It is suppose to be as close to ***** milk as possible and produce superior puppies. If you can find fresh goat's milk (not the powdered or canned versions), you can use that instead of the canned milk for the very best milk recipe. I have used this recipe since my first litter and continue to use it now. I can only say: my dogs have wonderful bone, I've had no sick puppies and my pups are vigorous!

MIX IN BLENDER:
1 Tablespoon Honey
1 Tablespoon Whipping Cream
2 Egg Yolks (I break the egg under hot water into my hand and "wash off" the white part before adding the yolks into the mix)
1 Can PET (brand) Evaporated Milk

DISSOLVE ON STOVE:

2 Packages Knox (brand) unflavored gelatin
1 Can water

Combine all above together. Add one more can of water. Blend well. Refrigerate. The stuff turns to a "pudding" state, but melts when warmed. I like to use up a batch within four days, otherwise I worry about it spoiling.

NOTE: If you are concerned about the honey in this formula, don't be. Honey is only a problem for human children (as the botulinum spores can be absored into infant's immature digestive tract). A puppy's digestive system is much different than that of a human infant, and there is no risk feeding honey to a puppy.

Esbilac is a great puppy/kitten formula to use. See if your vet or local pet store has some.
Your puppy may be old enough to start on puppy food. Buy a good quality puppy food (ask your vet to recommend one). Put some food in a blender with water and mix until it becomes liquid. Put the liquid in a baby bottle (you may need to enlarge the hole in the nipple a bit) and feed the pup that way. You need to weigh your puppy every other day or so to know how much to be feeding, ask your vet for a feeding schedule and how much to feed. For the first few weeks, newborn pups need to eat every 4-6 hours.
Then, as the puppy gets bigger, you'll gradually lessen the amount of water you add until the food is a soft gruel. At this point you can place the food in bowl and let the puppy lap it up. I recommend placing them in a bathtub or sink because puppies tend to get food EVERYWHERE when they first learn to eat from a bowl. It's actually quite amusing, so keep a camera handy.
Good luck!

Just be sure to not use cows milk, it's not good for them. There are a lot of things that you could use. But mainly it needs to taste similar to what you are going to feed it when it's grown, because that is how they learn what to eat. Research I read once said that the mother dog's milk tastes like what she eats so the puppy will learn what is safe to eat. If you can't get puppy formula. Try getting puppy chow and using a blender to liquify it with water. They are also omnivours like us, they got to have a lot of fiber as well as protein, it's cat's that have to have a lot of protein. If you have to use home remedies, cook meat and put in some veggies and liquify it, but that will get your puppy stuck on scraps. So what I was suggest is at the very least get some dog food, dry or canned, and liquify it with part puppy formula. It's better to go with all puppy formula, but mixing it with part puppy chow or dog food will cut down on costs. Good luck. Make sure to take it to the vet if you have trouble getting it to take to a bottle. They will usually do it if you squeeze a little in their mouth from the tip. They will be so hungry they will take it. Good Luck.

Additional: DO NOT GIVE IT KITTEN FOOD OR KITTEN MILK. Cats and dogs have different nutritional needs. The puppy will starve if not given the correct nutrients. So do not listen to kitten food suggestions. Good luck.

Use goats milk or Esbilac for puppies. When the puppy gets 2-3 weeks older, start mixing it with water and kibble chopped in a blender, and then gradually make it thicker, offer it to the baby on a plate.

Do not use cows milk, they get little from it and it tends to give them diarhea

if you cannot go to pet store and buy puppy replacer milk, get some dry dog food, soak it in water or milk till its soft, mash it good with a fork, set it in a plate in a box with the puppies, they will crawl in it for awhile, and eventually will eat it....my hubby used to raise rotweillers and this is what he did....also, if you are really worried, (im raising an orphan kitten right now),
get a pet baby bottle and put the mash in the bottle, cut the tip big enough for the mash to be sucked out and hand feed them for a few days or another week at least, but at four weeks they should be able to eat the mash from the plate, depending on the size of yr breed...

good luck....
