When you install XP, it will automatically over-write the relevant files of 98. You do not need to do anything special.

With the high cost of Win XP, I would recommend buying a new(er) computer with XP already installed. If you don't have the install disks for all the programs you have on your computer, you will lose them anyway, because when you change OSs you have to reinstall everything else. If you insist on installing XP on your computer, here's how:
Get your Win XP 2 install disc. Uninstall Win 98. Now you don't have an Operating system on your computer. Put your XP CD in the CD drive, turn off your computer and turn it back on. It should boot from the CD drive. When it does, just follow the directions on your screen.
If it doesn't boot from the CD get someone to help you reset the BIOS so it will.

You don't have to crash Win98 to install WinXP.

Check out this microsoft page and make sure your computer is compatible with XP. Follow the instructions.

You will need an XP CD either full version or upgrade.
