Here is a website that may be of interest to you. The following was taken from it. I only quoted the information that closely was related to your answer. The article in it's entirety is not lengthy, you would probably find it very interesting. It has a vivid description of Simon Peter as well as his name that Jesus gave him in the original Greek translation as well as an overview of his Good Works as one of the Apostles chosen by Jesus.

"......After being imprisoned several times in Jerusalem because of his faith, Peter left with his wife and possibly others. It is believed that he ministered in Babylon to the Jewish colonists there and it is, also, believed to be his location when he wrote his first epistle (1 Peter)."(1)
"Peter eventually went to Rome and while there, it is believed that Mark (the writer of the Gospel of Mark) served as his translator as he preached."......(2)
"According to church tradition, the Roman Emperor Nero, publicly announcing himself the chief enemy of God, was led in his fury to slaughter the Apostles. Because of the persecution, Peter was crucified upside down while in Rome. Concerning the last hours of his life, it is said that when Peter saw his own wife led out to die, he rejoiced because of her summons and her return home, and called to her very encouragingly and comfortingly addressing her by name, and saying, "O thou, remember the Lord." "(3)
"Of the final days of the apostle Peter in Rome, Jowett wrote that Peter was cast into a horrible prison called the Mamertine and for nine months, in absolute darkness, he endured monstrous torture manacled to a post. In spite of all the suffering Peter was subjected to, he converted his jailers, Processus, Martinianus, and forty-seven others. Peter met his death at the hand of the Romans in Nero's circus, 67AD."(4)

Buckner B. Trawick, in his book The Bible as Literature, asserts the following:
According to tradition, he [Peter] visited Corinth and Antioch in Syria and founded the church at Rome, where, DURING THE NERONIAN PERSECUTION (A.D. 64) HE WAS CRUCIFIED (head down, at his own request, for he felt himself unworthy of the sort of execution suffered by Jesus). -- Barnes and Noble, N.Y. 1968. P. 78.
Nero could be called a sadist. Crucifixtion was one of if not the most cruel forms of death. Death came slowly and suffocation was usually the ultimate cause. Trying to hold yourself up on broken limbs and spikes through the arms and feet was excrutiatingly painful, but only shear physical exhaustion usually ended the horrific struggle of the persons fight for life. The Roman's love of anything cruel and torterous where their enemies were concerned is well documented and widely known.
The John was the only Apostle that did not meet a violent death.
Persecution and death followed the Church and Christians until in 312 CE Constantine was about to lead his army into a battle that would change the world and make him a Roman Emperor. He was a pagan and worshipped the sun. He worried over the coming battle. Constantine is said to have started praying, in his words, to the "Supreme God" for help.
Things changed slowly. He was taught about being a Christian. Even with his instruction in Christianity, he could still be ruthless. Cesaer Constantine (as he would be known) was not get baptised until he was old of age. Most Roman Emperors that can after him were Christians.

You can read it in "Fox's book of martyrs" He was Crucified but he asked to be turned upside down because he felt unworthy to die the same way Christ did. All the Apostles were killed save John the beloved only though not for lake of trying.
IX. Peter
Among many other saints, the blessed apostle Peter was condemned to death, and crucified, as some do write, at Rome; albeit some others, and not without cause, do doubt thereof. Hegesippus saith that Nero sought matter against Peter to put him to death; which, when the people perceived, they entreated Peter with much ado that he would fly the city. Peter, through their importunity at length persuaded, prepared himself to avoid. But, coming to the gate, he saw the Lord Christ come to meet him, to whom he, worshipping, said, "Lord, whither dost Thou go?" To whom He answered and said, "I am come again to be crucified." By this, Peter, perceiving his suffering to be understood, returned into the city. Jerome saith that he was crucified, his head being down and his feet upward, himself so requiring, because he was (he said) unworthy to be crucified after the same form and manner as the Lord was.

Right. There are some pretty good sources that say that he was crucified upside down. It's not in the Bible, but there are several historians who said that that's what happened.

He was crucified, but upside down, because he felt unworthy to die the same way Jesus did.
