One of the gates is pearl,there are eleven others.They are all made of precious stone.
Think of them as a single ruby or diamond that is large enough to be a gate.
I get your point about irritation,yet it does not account for the others.

These answers are funny and wrong, the terms used for describing heavenly objects were used because their beauty defies anything we have ever seen on earth. Streets paved with gold, sea of glass, etc.
