JUST TO CLARIFY -this was an off the cuff remark shouted across a road last night and he gave no sign (until now) that he acknowledged it

NO WAY!
It was an off "handed comment" and not a 'bet' since the other person didn't offer to match the money should they lose.

You have actually made a verbal contract, if there are witnesses then you should pay up.

I often make such bets with friends (but not as expensive as yours) normally of the result of a sporting tournament, for example the last world cup cost me a meal for 4 at a local Chinese restaurant.

Yes you should pay. Take it as an expensive lesson in the evils of gambling. At least you didn`t loose your house over this daft bet. In future if you are going to partake in stupid bets, use something you can afford to lose. Like the WIFE!!!!!!

well it depends what your words were. if u said, i'll give u £100 if scotland beat france, then yeah u have to pay up, but otherwise i think you're safe.
But, never bet against Scotland, we always try and come good.

If you'd made a throwaway comment like that to me I wouldn't expect you to pay up. But I know some really tight bstards that would try to hold you to it. Buy him a beer and tell him to bugger off!

No handshake, no bet. Tell him to **** off! If he didn't agree to it at the time, no agreement was actually made.
