I went to a place in Hampton, VA (David Heydn of I AM Tattoos) and he is quite the artist. He's won a lot of trophies at different events- he designed my half sleeve and each time, I tipped him 20 bucks. He put a lot of work into it and if I didn't quite like something, he would wipe off the marker and start clean. Depends on the quality of work, I suppose.

If the Artist, yes ARTIST (not just a tattoist) designes a tattoo for you, from start to finish, anuthing less than $20 is an insult. But when you tip him, keep in mind, the time that goes into the drawing, and the actual time it takes to put the tattoo where you want it, and the size of it.

I would say between $10-20. It depends on the size, time and detail. I know that my tattoo artist charges $75 a hour. And I usually tip him about $15 because my tattoo's are done in under a hour.

If he owns the studio, you don't tip him. As the owner, if he's not making enough money, he can raise his prices. If he's just an employee, tip whatever you think it is worth, but certainly not more than 15% of the cost of the tattoo.
