the best thing to carry for safety is a whistle. there cheap and get peoples attention and if an attacker takes it from you he cant really hurt you with it.

you might check with the police (local and campus) to see if pepper spray is legal there. it is very effective against about every one (even big dogs) alot of automotive parts houses carry pepper spray that will fit in a purse or on a key chain.

knives are a bad idea. it takes alot of practice to be able to use a knife correctly and an attacker could easily take one from you.

Now it is over 15 dollars but i think it should be considered. I carry a pocket knife wherever i go (except for school) and I use a Smith and Wesson 2" blade. My brother uses a 3" blade. I have had this thing for years and It still is very strong. Nothing is loose and I rarely have to sharpen the blade.

You want something that is going to hold up and for that I recommend Smith and Wesson.

The answer is NONE. Once you have a weapon on you, you had better be extremely proficient in using it. There are always two things to consider - (1) making sure you will not hurt any innocent bystanders and (2) making sure you know what to do when you whipping out that knife escalates the violence to a whole new level - can you throw that knife and kill the person pointing the gun at you before they pull the trigger? If not, then dont carry a knife - your best bet is you own hands, fists, feet and voice. Scream, punch, kick and run.

Otherwise, there are hundreds of thousands of cheap knives out there - you need to know your local laws before buying one however. Personally I like a spring loaded switchblade - but those are dangerous because they tend to also open in your pocket unexpectedly. My friends lost 3 fingers because his opened on him in his pocket as he went to grab it.

You want to carry a knife...for...safety??? You'd get it taken away from you and then who'd be safe? For under $15 you can get a container of pepper spray. And if you want to be safer, don't go places alone and don't go into dangerous areas.
