The only thing i can think of to preserve an animal is either drain the blood and such an replace it with an elastic polymer or some such which taxedermist and some morticians do, freeze it, or put it in an air tight jar of formaldihide (very toxic). My suggestion is just take lots of pictures from different angles and dispose of it's remains. A picture lasts a lot longer and smells a lot better then decaying organics does :)

The best thing to do is to keep it cool. If you plan on waiting more than three days, wrap the bird in saran wrap. Be careful not to bend any feathers. Make sure the bird is completely wrapped. Then place it in the freezer. If you only plan on having the bird a few days, wrap it in saran wrap and place it in the fridge. When you transport it, make sure you have it in a cooler and on ice. This will all prevent decay.

You have to stuff it...you can have a "study skin" make out of it, which would cost less than having it stuffed to look life -like by a taxidermist. In the mean time keep it frozen until you can get it to the taxidermist. However if left frozen too long it will get freezer burned and will not be stuffable.

Wrap it in newspaper and drop it in the freezer, then if you want to get it stuffed try and get it to a taxidermist while it's still frozen, we store all birds this way once they have passed away.

Believe it or not....antifreeze. We used antifreeze for cadavers in my anatomy & physiology class in college. Antifreeze has the same preserving properties as formaldehyde and is often used.
