Trouble is, she's coming to us for Christmas dinner. Will she think we're snobby for offering her turkey, or should we make her a special Pedrigree Chum shepherds pie?

If this is true, it is NOT funny!!! She obviously needs help! Even if it is not true it still isn't funny because a lot of seniors can't afford groceries and are know to have been eating dog food.. that is sooo sad!

How about a bit of both ? Pedigree chum terrine with soda bread, followed by Turkey. To make her feel at home i suggest you switch off all the electricity and heating and urinate all over your house in early December so that your Lounge and Dining room are especially pungent.

It may be that she is unwilling to accept that the dog has died. If you get a chance, peek into her cupboard to see if the food is piling up in there. She may need more companionship to make up for the loss of the dog.
If indeed she needs the dog food for eating herself, talk to a social worker or to family to see how she could have better food. It isn't very funny to tease someone who is poor (and your grandmother besides).

Personally I think you should make it her biggest and best Christmas EVER. Which will be tough if she has been around for a while, But if you pull it off there's a good chance you will make a pensioner very happy! And making someone happy is worth a lot nowadays!

I always find Pedigree Chum a touch on the rich side, I would suggest either Pal en croute, or Butchers Tripe stroganoff.

On Christmas day, why don't you just hide when she comes round. She'll get sick of knocking in the end and will go and sit in the park and eat dogfood or something, leaving you to enjoy a nice p*iss free festive season.

As an attempt at humour, this misses the mark.
My nan died.
My dog died.
My children are spending Christmas with their father.

Maybe instead of being a snit, you should ask her over for dinner more often.

Some people of the older generation can be extremely frugal.

It may be that she is loaded with money, and your kindness now will result in a nice inheritance later.
