Just wanted to see if anyone has used effexor for anxiety/panic and what kind of positive/negative effects it had. Did it cure the problem if so how long. Please don't answer if you have never tried the drug or you aren't an MD.

Effexor, at a high enough dose, gives you the benefit of an SSRI, SNRI, and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor (slightly). It's a good choice for someone with anxiety that isn't responding to other SSRI's (like Paxil or Zoloft) because it gives you the combined benefits of all three major antidepressants. The only downside of it is it is horrible to get off of. It is probably the worst AD to try to taper off of because it affect so many neurotransmitters. Be careful with suicidal ideation as well. It tends to be higher on Effexor than other AD's.

I'm with kaye7.

I've been taking Effexor for a few years now. It has made me gain weight terribly.
It has made me kind of "numb." Like I just don't really care about some things.
Also, if I happen to miss a dose, I get extremely ill(mostly nausea).

It HAS helped with my anxiety AND depression, though.

I guess it depends on how important/unimportant these things are to you. For me, I care more about my weight, responsibilities, and such. I'm in the process of going off Effexor. It makes me too unable to function, It wasn't that big of a deal to me before, but I started college this fall and having that numbness and "I don't give a crap" mentality that go along with Effexor isn't working for me.

Of course, everyone reacts to medications differently. While it caused problems for me, it could work wonders for you. You never really know unless you try.

In my case, the cons are starting to outweigh the pros, which is why I'm going off the Effexor.

I was on effexor xr 225mg/day for 2.5 years
PROS
worked well on anxiety and depression

CONS
I gained ALOT of weight and never before had weihgt problems
I didn't care about much(got irresponsible)
bad withdrawls for like two weeks(and thats not coming off it cold turkey)

I have been off effexor for over a year and am still fat I've lost 24 lbs of it though.
It did what it was supose to with my depression and anxiety but know i have other issues like weight-loss to be depressed about.

Doctors say that only 30% will gain weight and 20-30% will lose weight.
When I was on it it made me not even care that i was getting fat because "LIFE WAS GOOD"
You might want to try it and if you see any weight gain or loss you may want to try something eles
Everyone is different have different reactions.

I have been on Effexor XR for a number of years now. It has been a tremendous help in helping me to cope better with day to day life, anxiety, and panic attacks. However, there are side effects like with any other medication. For me they ranged from weight gain, night sweats, vivid dreams and/or nightmares, dry mouth, and constant yawning. As some other ppl stated not taking the medication as prescribed can really mess with you. I know that if I happen to miss a dose I get anxious, disoriented, or feel loopy. It can even cause you to have seizures if you try to stop taking it cold turkey. Everyone is different so the effects are going to be different. Only you and your Dr. can decide what is best for you!

What should I avoid while taking Effexor?

Ask your doctor before taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for pain, arthritis, fever, or swelling. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others. Using an NSAID with Effexor may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.
Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Effexor.
Effexor may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

I am on 150 mg. of effexor. I have been on it for almost two months with no help with my anxiety. I am going to up the dosage and see if that will help. Everyone has a different experience with antidepressants. It could work for you but it doesn't seem to work for me. Talk to your doc. he should help you with this more than anyone Else can.

Yes, I found that the cheesiest lamest thing I swore I would never do actually helped me better than medication, therapy, everything, and lame as it is try relaxation tapes or CD's. I only listened to the tape a few times but do it every time I feel stressed now and my anxiety attacks have almost dissapeared, so it may help you. Get the ones that tell you to go down stairs and through a door and all that while controlling your breathing.
