If you're interested in diving, you should really stay on Koh Tao instead of Koh Samui. It's the smaller island a couple of hours away from Samui - it's much less crowded and much nearer the best dive sites.

If you are going before April next year, you might also want to consider going to the other coast of Thailand and diving the Similan Islands on a liveaboard boat - the Similans are easily the best diving in Thailand (much better than Koh Tao and Samui) but they are more remote. You could stay in a luxury hotel at Khao Lak like the Sarojin or in Phuket.

I recently stayed at the Metropolitan in Bangkok - it was fab and not too crazy expensive, although the layout is slightly unusual. It's attached to the Met Bar (great martinis) and right next to the Banyan Tree which is home to Vertigo and the Moon Bar - the most fantastic night time views over Bangkok and wonderful cocktails.

It's got a list of fantastic shopping, restaurants and bars. I sampled plenty of them and enjoyed it all thoroughly.

Bangkok is fantastic - have a fab time!

Koh Samui is great choice too - it's a beautiful island and you can dive there. Travel time between Bangkok and Koh Samui is fairly short and the flight is fairly cheap.

All the answers are pretty good. Here is a tip on currency,if you can take £50.00 notes and go to the 'Super Rich' money changers in Bangkok you'll get a better rate than the bank. You'll have a great time. Need glasses or any dental work? Bangkok is the place about half or less the price in the UK.

It's a great trip but you will want more time in Bangkok----so much to see and do. Also, The train is a great way to get from Chang Mai to BKK. It's a fun, romantic overnight trip.

In BKK stay at Malaysia Hotel. Nice, Clean Good location and only 12-14 dollars a night. The best deal going. Usually includes breakfast too.

We went to Singapore for a month to visit my partners family. While we were their we had a trip to the river Kwai and Bangkok. Lovely place, people are very kind but are hard sellers, you must bargain, never pay the asking price, they expect it. Visit the market outside Bangkok it's fantastic.but I can't remember the name.
Don't make the same mistake as we did, We brought all new clothes to go with. Wrong travel very light clothes etc, are very cheap and good, but you must.must bargain.
Another thing it's better to take English money you get good exchange rates.
Tell your fella if he see's a lovely looking bird, it could well be a lady boy. I was fooled a few times.

Enjoy yourselves.

Try the rats, cockroaches, grasshoppers, maggots all for sale at the markets, never tried them myself though!

From what I remember (been there twice), these locations ring a positive bell.
What I would suggest, is that you make sure you do 3 things if you have enough time: Bangkok, beach south and also up north in the mountains (could take a guide or guided tour from Bangkok for that part).

If you are Padi, try Koh Tao, which is not far from Koh Samui. Plenty of accommodations up to your taste.
