New family dog...vet sais it has epilepsy and that it is pretty common. I've never heard of a dog with this condition.

Unfortunately, epilepsy is not rare in the dog world. I don't know that I would call it exactly common, but it occurs a fair amount.

Best thing to do is discuss potential needs for treatment of seizures, and what to expect. Make sure that you are as well prepared as possible. Most dogs live a long life with this condition, if properly medicated. Some dogs do become refractory to medications, but that is only about 10% of the ones that we see.

It is common. My friend had a dog with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is not unusual in dogs and it is treatable.

I has a Great Dane, Buffy, that had seizures regularly. Scared the heck out of me every time she had one, but there was really nothing we could do but be there with her till they passed.

previously, my princess had seizures, & despite many medications, the fits didn't subside.
finally, my vet recommended:

she is a maltese, 4.5kg. she took half tab daily....it's like a miracle pill to her. it stopped the 2nd day.
do get advices from your vet on this one...princess & i shared 1 pill daily :p

There are some breds more prone to have it.
Its bred into them/bloodline/from birth.
It will get worse if not treated w/meds.
