To be accurate, it's combine of Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do kick.
However keep in mind Mirko's style started as Shotokan karate, Tae Kwon Do, and boxing. He trained under Cikatic.

Does it matter?
It's a basic kick, effective but basic. The best kicks, punches, techniques are the simple, quick, basic. That is far removed from what most MA teach about fighting. You don't need to train for 6 years to kick someone in the head.
The only kick thats more complicated that I've seen actually work is the spinning back kick. IF it hits it usually is the beginning of the end for the victim.

dude.. As it is said no martial art is great, it's only the fighter! But if u give a closer look TKD is more of sport especially since the advent of WTF, but if u can use those techniques effectively, and don't follow the rules that u use in a match, there is no reason why it shouldn't be effective in street self defense! Muay Thai was created to eliminate the enemies in the battles and does have some deadly techniques, but TKD teaches u effective blocks and if u have the necessary speed u could easily beat the other fighter!

High kicks are generally associated with Tae Kwon Do & northern Shaolin boxing. They have, of course, spread to other styles, including Shotokan. (Anyone who tells you that his style is "pure" without any "foreign" influences is blowing it out of his a$$). To the best of my knowledge, Muay Thai does not have high kicks, the emphasis is more on close range fighting.

The dynamics of a good kick are universal, Martial arts express the human body differently but the original concept of advanced techniques are shared.

i have studdied over 16 styles.
at this point when it comes down to kicks and punches, it is personal preference.
All styles copy each other, a kick is a kick. A thai kick is usually shin but i use alternates. No-one sticks to a style when they are pro fighters thats what makes these fights so great and interesting.
