With Lavoisier and other chemists using the steps of the research method, the alchemists were seen as amateurs who did not know what was actually going on. Alchemy was a mixture of religion and pre-chemistry. Lavoisier was able to separate the religion from the science. Once religion was out of the way, the true scientists could work without the church telling them what to do.

I think it brought in the Age of Reason. Because of the new scientific knowledge and discovery, people now had logical explanations for the things that they previously relied on religion and mythology to explain.

Anything we cannot understand we attribute to "other forces". Perhaps ghosts or spirits, or magic.

As man developed in the scientific area, through experimentation, they were able to explain exactly how and why some things happened.... and it wasn't magic at all!!!

If you traveled back in time to Neanderthal days and you brought with you a lighter.... You would be the only one who could create fire with just a flick of your thumb. To us, it is just a compressed gas with a flint, a wick and a metal striker.... but to them it would be magic.

As mankind's understanding continues to stretch out to things just beyond our comprehension, we will continue to grow and continue to debunk more and more "magic".
