ok this is tough to explain but i`ll try first off power starts in your feet...serious the backfoot, if your right handed have your left foot facing your opponentand flat on the ground set to punch, your right foot should beflat as well and behind your body with 80 percent of your weight on it and as you punch the heel of your foot should lift off the ground while the front half of your foot stays on the ground , make a consciouseffort to be using your legs to drive your body weight into the punch, now this next tip will also help is have your hand formed in a fist with the thumb on the outside of your knuckes and the thumb at say 9`oclock as your fist is launched toward its target rotate your fist so your thmb moves to 6 oclock as you do this your shoulder muscle in the turn can generate alot of power, you want the thumb to enterr that 6oclock position at the last possible moment before it reacheds its target also follow through after connecting but remember power starts in the feet legs hips shoulders in that order.

remember the old bull worker? 2 handles with springs in the centre that you pull apart?
well in boxing and kickboxing gyms we have this method set up.
The springs are attached to a wall and 1 handle on the other end. you then extend your arm in a punch motion. This is done slowly but to full extention. Usually 200-500 per arm depending on skill and weight. Also when punching bags you punch the largest heaviest bag. You also do this with the heaviest gloves you have, about 18oz usually. The trick we use is to soak the gloves in water to make them even heavier.

My Karate instructor always told me to relax my arm while swinging for better momentum and, at the last instant before hitting the guy, tense my arm for a harder hit.

train with a punching bag. Use some heavier gloves that force you to put more effort into your swings, that way when you take them off, you'll be able to swing effortlessly.

Rocky Marciano, I think it was, had trouble keeping his guard up. His manager resorted to "Outside" help. Rocky was put in a pool, to practice swinging his fists in the pool, in the water, to build up his shoulders, so he could keep his guard up in later rounds. You know the rest of the story.
