There are MANY overweight people who are not ashamed or insecure. Have you never heard of all the Miss Big and Beautiful pageants all over the world? There was even one in China last week.

If you're insecure it's all you, not society, not your mother, not your father, not "that guy", not anything, it's just you being insecure. It's probably fair to say the in-shape crowd is more secure, but so is the rich crowd, the powerful and famous crowd, however even amongst there ranks are those who are insecure. If you are insecure you should do something about it, but don't expect to become thin and suddenly all the problems just magically disappear. You'll still be insecure, you'll just be less fat.

I agree with Lucy--they're insecure b/c of society. There is so much pressure, from the media, from health organizations, that it's better to be thin, how "fat" the world is getting. Nobody emphasizes loving who you are much anymore, which is where the emphasis should be I think. Now, I know darn well I could stand to lose a good 50 lbs, but I'm learning to love myself for who I am right now. My husband could care less. He thinks I'm sexy exactly the way I am and I have to admit that I feel it. It's all in the attitude you put out and how you feel about yourself. For me, eating right and exercising is more about how I feel than anything. When I exercise daily and eat right, man, I bounce off the walls with just natural energy. It's a fantastic feeling that I'm addicted to! Going down a jean size is just the icing on the cake.

A lot of it is society. Just walk into any store. There are pictures of girls with small waists and hips, and we see men get all googly-eyed.
I personally am pretty much comfortable with the way I look. The only reason I would want to lose weight is to make tape (I'm in the military).
A year ago, you would have never caught me wearing a two piece swimsuit to the beach; now I do it all the time. It helps that my finace drools over me, makes me feel better. Plus, he's the one I am with when I go to the beach.
Don't feel like you have to conform to society's "standard." If you're comfortable with yourself, then be that way. Give society the "bird." Later chika!

Individually we may be just fine with our body, but in most cases
society has it own words to say. Whether we should accept what others (=society) dictate is an other issue. But for sure, it does affect your decisions. Most of the times we are dieting not to become healthier but merely (and sad enough) to fit in a some lower-size jean or t-shirt. At this point, we spent time, money and effort to please others, that is; society or part of it.
Subsequently, there is a growing trend ( fat / body acceptance) aiming the love of our body as-is regardless of society standards and predefined rules and shapes. Escaping mass pressure of society is not that easy but yet doable.
These are 2 articles, the first one discusses the self-acceptance issue, the second answers: is obesity a disease?

Thats great! Good for you! I dont think all over weight ppl are insecure, but alot of them are. Thats how alot of them got to the point theyre at now...insecurity. And now when they try to lose, they are still insecure, thats why they cant fight the eating habits they have.
Im also thin, and ppl get on my case about my weight. But I dont have an eating disorder, I had to go on a medical / special diet due to yeast overgrowth, and everyone somewhere everyday, just has to say how thin I am. Im so sick of that.
I have a friens whos over weight, and I see what she goes thru, she struggles, and shes not insecure, but, maybe she is, and I just dont see it.

I am so happy for you!! I never had an eating disorder. People think that eating disorders aren't a problem in Black America. I am here to tell you that they are lie because I watched my cousin starve herself to death. I wish she could have came to her senses, but she didn't. The thing that was so awful about it she was only a size 3. By the time of her death she deteriorated to a size 14 in girls clothes. It was awful. I wish people learn to love themselves. All they end up doing is hurting the people that love them when they act out this foolish behavior.

look here " choose me " , being overweight is not a problem unless you have medical problems that effect your health . but just being happy who you are and excepting who you are and loving yourself for who you are , will make alot of diffrence on what people say or seem to care . attitude has a lot to do with it , but accepting yourself is a perfect way to say , " this is me , what you see , is what you get " . it will give you confidence , and a more happy person . like . hey, except me for who i am " . believe me , i have never had a problem with my weight which i weigh 236 , but of course now my legs hurt . but if i didn't have all this pain in my legs , i would still be light on my feet . i love to eat, and my husband loves me for who i am as a person . he see's kindness in my heart & in my eyes & voice he says . right now , i'm eating less for the pain oon my legs , but either than that , i'm happy being me . so sweetie wish you the best in life & in luck . be happy ........from someone that has been there and still there .

Society has enormous pressure on people who are overweight. Influence is a very powerful thing, especially when you have the government writing and accepting legislation that refers to being overweight as wrong.

I'm one of them and i can explain to you why. First when you enter to a room you feel like everybody is looking at you because you are fat. When you look at a skinny person no matter who ugly they are you feel like they are way better than you. Sometimes ( not in my case) but they might think that theirs family doesn't love them because there fat and stuff but people can really make a difference in them by making them understand that you can be the most overweight person in the world but that doesn't change who you are and who people fell about you
