You can go to your local jurisdiction and view any arrests or sentencings. It is all public record in the US.

You can't get a free background check, you can try zabasearch but the only information you'll get is from public records that are available for free , and a lot of the information you receive will be out-dated.

Illinois is the only state which has a free background check website I know of.Everywhere else, I guess you have to pay.

If you don't know how to conduct a background check, free or not, you probably ought not be doing one. You run the risk of privacy invasion if done incorrectly, and you'll probably get sued to boot. Leave that sort of thing to professionals.
