I've heard people say that espresso has less caffeine. Is it just because less coffee is used to make it, or because it is a darker roast?

Darker roasted coffee has a *little* less caffeine, true. It's roasted longer, and the roasting process destroys some of the caffeine. But espresso...you use a lot of grounds to make it and it's pretty concentrated. But then, you usually drink less of it...I don't know. It's not like a health drink.

If you drink *any* coffee in moderation, made by any means, you should be OK. But it's not like you can suck down espressos at will because they're low-caff. Mind *your* body chemistry--what's important is how coffee hits *you*. Like, my dad can suck down a Big-Gulp sized coffee and go straight to sleep. I sometimes get the shakes just from drinking a Coke (half the caff of drip coffee. Well, and a lot of sugar.) If you like dark roast, drink that, but it's not a free caffeine pass.

Expresso has more caffeine as the coffee is more concentrated. The "roast" does not determine the amount of caffeine in the coffee. To reduce the caffeine it must be removed, thus decaffeinated.

in the roasting procedure a particular volume of caffeine is burned off. that's authentic with all coffees. in case you pull the roast early the a lot less caffeine is burned off. the reason espresso has a lot less caffeine is because the espresso is packed tightly, the water is pushed instantly through lower than pressure, and that's this kind of darkish roast that it has the least caffeine to commence with. power of espresso style so as - power of caffeine in opposite order: Blond Roast - elementary Blonde/Brown 1/2-city Roast - elementary Brown city Roast - elementary-Medium Brown complete city Roast - Medium Brown Vienna Roast - Medium-darkish Brown elementary French Roast - darkish Brown French Roast - darkish Brown espresso Roast - Deep Brown Decaf espresso: 3-5mg, Tea: 75mg, Cola/Soda: 75-80 5, Reg. espresso: 95-110mg; Robusta espresso: 100 and 5-115mg.
