Brain tumors are made of cells growing and reproducing in an uncontrolled fashion.

A benign brain tumor is formed from abnormal cells that form a distinct boundary from the surrounding normal brain.

A malignant brain tumor is dangerous because it consists of cancerous cells growing into adjacent brain tissue so that it may no longer function normally. The life threatening nature of a malignant brain tumor depends on both the type of cancerous cells that comprise the tumor and the exact location of the tumor in the brain.

Tumors that arise from cells found normally in the brain are primary brain tumors while metastatic brain tumors are formed by cancer cells originating from a cancer in another part of the body such as lung or breast cancer

Metastatic cancers are far more common than primary tumors of the brain and spinal cord.
Aside from exposure to vinyl chloride or ionising radiation, there are no known environmental factors associated with brain tumors. Mutations and deletions of so-called tumor supressor genes are incriminated in some forms of brain tumors. Patients with various inherited diseases, such as Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia, neurofibromatosis type 2 are at high risk of developing brain tumors.
Mobile phones (AE: cell phones) might be a cause of brain tumors, according to one report.

there is no known/proven cause for the majority of brain tumors as is the case with tumors in general except for some like smoking causes lung cancer. It is hereditary in some, meaning coming from the genetic inheritance from one of the parents, in some others it is congential meaning, present since birth, in others it is primarily a cancer from elsewhere spreading by blood stream to the brain and in the vast majority the cause is unknown factors deranging the delicate genetic control which governs cell multiplications.Intrestingly since the primary brain cell unit- the neuron does not multiply in adults it is the supporting cells called glia which cause most tumors.
