The allies divided up Germany into four zones, and three of them rather quickly became West Germany, and was granted a good bit of autonomy, although allied troops were stationed there for some time. The fourth, the Soviet sector, became East Germany, and the complication was Berlin was in the eastern sector. So Berlin itself was similarly divided, and you had this small western culture enclave in West Berlin inside East Germany, which was dominated by the Soviets. That continued until the Berlin wall was built, caused untold hardships to people whose friends and relatives were on "the other side," and eventually was torn down in 1989.
I remember when it was, because I watched people prying bricks out of the wall on the TV in my hospital room, looking out over my broken leg. Made me cry, and even made me forget my pain.
