If you have the keys, slide them into the ignition, turn clockwise. If the car starts, it's still operating.

Odds on are it's running around as a Toyota Prius. Or a washing machine, refrigerator or even a computer case. Unless it's still registered in your state, the VIN isn't going to help any. Car Fax can't help; they don't go back that far.
