Having lived in both Leeds and Newcastle, I would say that Newcastle is the more friendly but Leeds is the more stylish; with great shops etc and a cosmopolitan city.
Leeds is a large university city with Leeds Uni and Leeds Met and there ae plenty of great bars and clubs, I always felt it was a very local feel about the place, which was nice.
The Nottingham theory has somewhat changed as all the boys goto uni there expecting that ratio but it isn't like that.
Leeds or Newcastle........Leeds

Nottingham, my home town, used to be a great city but now is full of drugs and street crime, Newcastle is a great place with great people but there is not much work around. All the others you mention have problems with local economies but are okay. If you fancy Leeds why not try the nearby smaller city of York or even Wakefield where the hosing is relatively less expnsive

Come South a bit to Stoke on Trent - close enough to all of these places due to the M6 or a quick run over the hills or along the A50 to Notts and the M1.

You should start with an open mind!
Look at what you want and then look at what's available!
City + North of England + Safety + Environment + Scenery + Friendliness = Carlisle!
